Is it possible you’re not gettin’ some this Valentine’s Day? Don’t worry. Most of us aren’t either.
The truth is, whether you have a partner or not, there’s a better chance that the sirens of love will sound on any other date. So don’t succumb to the pressure from the bombardment of romantic ads and instead pay attention to the other signs the universe is sending you that you’re not really that lonely and it’s just another day in the year.
There are few companies or brands that do not launch a marketing campaign for Valentine’s Day, making us believe that there is a massive change on the horizon. But the truth is that its incidence is quite irregular in different countries. In the United States, for example, it is an important occasion for restaurants, romantic hotels, florists and merchandising producers, but does anyone in Spain know of a couple who stop their routine in the middle of the week to go out for dinner?
And what is more telling: How many couples do we know who boast about celebrating Valentine’s Day? And what would we think of them? Would we be envious to see them enjoying a relationship full of little details and opportunities well-seized? Or would we think that they are cheesy people with no criteria of their own who spend their money on imposed customs to make their entourage believe that their relationship is in good health? There is a saying that is so fitting for this occasion: “Tell me what you’re great at and I’ll tell you what you lack.”
And if you don’t have a partner, even better, because you won’t have to find out if your partner is one of those who gets uptight if you don’t buy them a gift on this date. And when you think about it, who needs a partner like that? This year, social media networks are full of trends where people celebrate ironically for not having anyone to celebrate Valentine’s Day with. Do they celebrate to drown their sorrows or for self-love? We’re guessing there’s a little bit of everything.
It’s clear that we tend to think the grass is greener on the other side. But, while many of us spend the rest of the year actively searching for someone to take us out of the inhospitable dating app market, it’s always a relief to not have to make a fuss when this day comes around.
