3 Broadcast in HD
Let’s set up a feature film style broadcast!
We can improve the quality of our broadcasts by broadcasting in HD using external software. Although there are several, we will review how to do it using the OBS program. The first thing to do is to Download and Install OBS. Once installed on our computer, we go to the next step, which is to set up OBS to broadcast on the website:
- Open the program and go to the BROADCAST page of the website where we click on Broadcast in HD (we haven’t started broadcasting yet).
- Go back to the OBS and locate the CONTROLS section in the upper right corner of OBS.
- Click on SETTINGS where we can edit some features in the following sections: Broadcast, Output, Audio and Video.
Broadcast
We fill in the three sections with the information we find in the broadcast window on the website:
- Service: Personalized
- Server
- Stream key
Output
The parameters to be set in each section are as follows:
- Output Mode: Advanced
- Audio Track: 1
- Encoder: Software (x264)
- Frequency Control: CBR
- Video Bitrate: 1000 to 1500 Kbps
- Keyframe Interval: 1
- CPU usage profile: Ultrafast
- Profile: Baseline
- Tuning: Zerolatency
Audio
We only have to edit the Sample Rate to 44.1 kHz.
Vídeo
Adjust each section as follows:
- Base Resolution (Canvas): 854×480 (If our OBS doesn’t allow 854×480 we can use 1280×720)
- Output Resolution (Scaling): 854×480
- Scaling Filter: Bicubic (Fine scaling, 16 samples)
- Common FPS values: 24 NTSC
Now all the necessary parameters are set up, so we proceed to add the camera + microphone in the SOURCES section. Click on the [+] button to add each device.
Camera
Select VIDEO CAPTURE DEVICE. A window with several data appears and we only modify the following ones:
- Device: Choose the camera installed on the computer.
- Type of resolution/FPS: Custom
- Resolution: In this section it must always be the same resolution that we put in the VIDEO section.
- FPS: Custom
Once modified, click Accept.
Microphone
Select AUDIO INPUT CAPTURE. In this window under the Device option we can see a list of the microphones we have available to choose from, so we scroll down the list and choose the microphone we are going to use. Once selected, click Accept.
Setup is complete!
Now we start broadcasting. To do this from OBS we click on “Start Broadcasting”. Then we go to the page and verify that in the Status option it says DETECTED, if so, click on the Start Broadcast button, and we’re ready to start the show. As for the video and chat, it is important to remember that we’ll always see the broadcast image in the program and the chat on the website. That’s the way it works.
